Peritoneal mesothelioma is an uncommon intra-abdominal malignancy. Its aetiology has been believed to be because of either inhalation or intake of asbestos particles. We provide a case of peritoneal mesothelioma cancer developing as a result of an unique 3rd route and the inoculation of fibres into the peritoneal cavity by penetrating injury and direct transportation.
1. Introduction, Deadly mesothelioma of the peritoneum is a rare malignancy, but one that is increasing in incidence. Prognosis is poor and almost universally fatal. The neglected average survival rate is 6 months and even with the most aggressive multimodal therapy in the kind of debulking or cytoreductive surgical treatment and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy 5 year survival varies only from 29% to 59% [1, 2]
Usually the inhalation of fibers precedes the peritoneal inoculation and therefore it can be hoped that environmental health procedures on the handling of asbestos will begin to have a result on the incidence of peritoneal mesothelioma cancer in the bulk of cases [3] This case would regrettably not be effected by such procedures due to the unique aetiology of shot of the fibres as explained.
